Colposcopy

If you have had an abnormality detected on a pap smear, you may be referred for a colposcopy.

This is a procedure where the cervix is viewed under magnification with an instrument called a colposcope (like a microscope that allows a close up inspection of the cervix).

You are able to see your gynaecologist for an initial consultation at the consulting suites in Wattletree Road, followed by an appointment for the colposcopy at Masada Private Hospital a few days later, or if you prefer, both the consultation and colposcopy can be done at the same time at one appointment at Masada Private Hospital. The reception staff can be contacted on ph: 9005 3888 and can arrange these appointments.

For the examination, you will be required to change into a gown and lie on an examination couch, with your legs supported. Your doctor will insert a speculum into the vagina and may take another pap smear. The cervix is then painted with a solution to highlight any changes on the cervix. The cervix is then inspected with the colposcope. You may require a biopsy, where a small sample of tissue is sent off for testing.

If you have a biopsy, you should wait two days before swimming in pools, tampons or sex to reduce the risk of infection.

It is preferable that you do not have your period at the time of colposcopy to allow for the best possible view of the cervix.
